Decked in rainbow and glitter scrubs, 80 nurses and midwives from across Australia will march for ‘A better healthcare system for all – a dream worth fighting for’ during tonight’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
Travelling from interstate to join the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association (NSWNMA) float, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) members will promote equal access to quality, non-discriminatory healthcare nationwide.
NSWNMA Councillor and Illawarra midwife, Emma Gedge, said she was looking forward to Mardi Gras and all the fun of Sydney’s WorldPride festival.
“As nurses and midwives, our common dream is to work for a system that treats everyone with fairness and compassion, no matter who they are or where they are from,” said Ms Gedge.
“We would also like a better healthcare system for ourselves! Imagine coming to work and not feeling overwhelmed and afraid due to the increased number of patients in your care?”
As they party along Oxford Street, the nurses and midwives will emphasise a host of universal health messages, including:
- Nurse to patient ratios for NSW
- Equality for Victoria
- Safe workplaces for ACT
- Voice for Queensland
- Safety in numbers for South Australia
2023 is the seventh year the NSWNMA has proudly participated in Mardi Gras to promote the importance of diversity, inclusion and social justice for the health and wellbeing of all Australians.
