A step to ending placement poverty – Commonwealth Prac Payment to start 1 July 2025
The NSWNMA alongside the ANMF, have long advocated and fought for paid placements to help alleviate placement poverty for students, like you, who are finding it increasingly challenging to complete their qualifications in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis.
Our union led a campaign to demand the federal government commit to supporting nursing and midwifery students who are having to shoulder the burden of unpaid placements. Students and the community tirelessly took action by:
- Collecting over 7,000 signatures via our online petition
- NSWNMA student members met with the Federal Education Minister at Parliament House, Canberra
- Speaking and attending paid placement rallies in Sydney CBD
This collective action led to the Australian Government committing $427.4 million over four years to establish the Commonwealth Prac Payment to support higher education and VET students while undertaking mandatory placements.
From 1 July, eligible domestic students will be able to access $331.65 per week.
This payment is a start, but we know that it does not go far once we factor in cost of living in today’s environment.
We will continue exploring ways to reduce the financial burden facing nursing and midwifery students.
